Birth Documentary
Birth Story: Ina May Gaskin and the Farm Midwives

A birth documentary on the big screen?!?!? I never thought I’d be able to witness something like that, but YES! It is possible! It’s happening on June 16 and 22, 2012 at the Los Angeles Film Festival! Tickets are only $13!

The birth documentary is called Birth Story: In May Gaskin and the Farm Midwives. Filmmakers Sarah Lamm and Mary Wigmore started filming for this monumental documentary in 2009.

Why do we need a birth documentary, you may ask? With movies like What To Expect When You’re Expecting, which portray birth in America as an event to be managed and controlled, birth is actually much more enjoyable when a woman lets go and believes in her body’s ability to birth a baby. For many women having a natural child birth is easily one of the best experiences in their lives. Birth documentaries show women how to work with their bodies in labor. I wrote about how amazing it was to see a woman giving birth streaming live online. Women need to see exactly how being calm and focused help the labor process.

The producers are currently trying to raise $10,000 to go towards helping the production of the film. You can go here to pledge your support. You can give as much (there’s a contributor designation for $10,000 and up) or as little (just $1!) as you can. I particularly loved the designation of the $1 - $9.99 contributors. You get to be called an Outreach Movie Doula and help birth this baby! =) I don’t know about you, but I’m glad to help! I’m sure I can AT LEAST find four quarters stuck in a couch somewhere...

If you can find a little more between the cushions, say $25, you’ll be able to receive a DVD of the documentary when it is available!

I implore you, if you had a natural birth, know of someone who had a natural birth, wish you had a natural birth or just think birth is cool, to GET THE WORD OUT! Ina May has tirelessly worked for the normalization and inclusion into American culture of natural birth practices. We can all say thanks by spreading the word!
