My Natural Motherhood Journey: Hello Toni! Thank you for sitting down with us for this interview. Why don't we start by sharing a bit about who you are with our readers.
Toni: My name is Toni Harman. I live in Brighton on the South coast of England. I am a mum of a beautiful 3 year old daughter and I juggle being a mum with working as a film-maker. I am also a huge fan of doulas!

My Natural Motherhood Journey: What was your inspiration for making this childbirth video?

Toni: I had quite a difficult birth experience 3 years ago (before I knew about doulas).

As a way to come to terms with my birth, I made a documentary childbirth video about my own birth and postpartum experience as well as the experience of four other couples who met at an antenatal class (Real Birth Stories - a 3 DVD boxed set).

At the premiere, a doula came up to me and said simply, "You should make a film about doulas!". I did some research, met lots of doulas and thought yes, this would make a great film!

When I filmed my first doula-supported birth, I saw with my own eyes the amazing difference having a doula can make and to be honest, it was a life-changing experience.

I think doulas are fantastic and I want to do everything I can to tell the world about them!




My Natural Motherhood Journey: How do you hope this DVD will impact its viewers?

Toni: I am now on a personal mission to tell the world about doulas. I am hoping this film will help spread awareness of doulas as I truly believe:

If more people know about doulas = more people will hire doulas = more people will have better births = the world will be a better happier place!

My Natural Motherhood Journey: Share anything you'd like about the making of the DVD.

Toni: As well as operating the camera, I also edited the film. And every single time I watched the births, I cried. Even now, having seen the births hundreds of times, I cry every single time. Just thinking about it now makes me well up! That's what filming doulas does for you!!

My Natural Motherhood Journey: Do you have any plans for making other doula-oriented products?

Toni: I'm planning on shooting my next film on doulas! I'm just setting it up now, but the plan is to film doulas in the UK, USA, Canada & Australia.

My Natural Motherhood Journey: What has the feedback been for your DVD so far?

Toni: The film's had a brilliant response so far. Lots of good-feeling and such lovely feedback. It makes me feel very proud.

I've had a few questions like "why didn't I film a hospital birth?" Simple answer. I couldn't get permission to film in any hospital, which is a real shame as I would have loved to have included a hospital birth. But hopefully my next film will include hospital births!
