It seems the norm around here to start to read when you're 3. My two oldest did (actually the second oldest started at 2) and now the 3yo. is on her way.
When she first started showing signs of readiness (pointing out letters and knowing all their sounds), it caught me off guard. I had to go rummage through our home schooling storage boxes to go find the Bob Books and Starfall.com story print outs we used waaaay back when.
It's always amazing to me how much they love to learn at that age. My 3yo. started to give me a bit of trouble in having to sit still for so long. Once she took a look at what we were going to do (read a story she's familiar with from starfall.com), she was more than happy to turn those pages with me!
After the beginning Starfall books, we go to the Bob Books. I usually stay with the website, the printed out books and Bob Books until they're able to start books like Frog and Toad.
Right now, my 2yo. is getting his early education in reading rather innocently by watching his older sister on starfall.com. She gets her education by watching her brother and sister go through the Spell to Write and Read phonograms. It's like a cascade effect!
The baby is still discovering her hands.
