Day 13 - Learning About Music

I love exploring music with my children. When we study music I usually have them listening as well as discussing the piece or song. We put it on, just sit and listen.
It's good to let the music play completely through at least once before I give my comments or ask questions on it. I want our children to be able to concentrate on the sounds.
After we've heard it once, I ask them questions about how they feel about the music and what they think the composer was trying to say through the music. I also tell them all I know about that piece or song and if they have questions that go beyond my scope of knowledge, we're off to the library!
I usually try to wrap up a music listening session with some sort of notebooking. Since the childrens' attention and imagination have been captured during the session, it usually isn't hard to have some quality writings in their heads by the end. If a particularly perceptive thought was spoken, I try to capture that on paper by having the children stop and write it down.
I see all these expensive music education curriculum out there, but really, it doesn't take much to learn about music. Just let your imagination go!
