Day 14 - Foreign Language

by Chante

If You Can Read This You Were Probably Homeschooled

If You Can Read This You Were Probably Homeschooled

I've heard it said acquiring a second language is easiest between the Pre-K and elementary stages. To that end, I've followed Noah Plan's scope and sequence of teaching French to our children starting in Pre-K.

I chose French (as opposed to Spanish) because I thought it was a good pre-cursor to Latin! To aid our childrens' ease of spelling and general basic understanding of English words, I've opted to teach them the language of many of its roots.

When I looked at many Latin programs I was a bit scared. I didn't want to be fumbling through the year. I wanted to present something to them with a firm foundation. Since I knew I was not confident in teaching them Latin, I started with a language I loved, French!

I figured, since French comes from Latin we'd be okay and actually be better prepared for Latin since we would be familiar with some of the words.

This is our last year for French. We've had much fun using the Noah Plan's French program as well as the Muzzy program (which is really big in Europe I hear, or it was when it first came out) for free thanks to our local library system. We've had enough experience with a romance language that I feel we are (and I'm counting myself as well) ready for a new language! Latin here we come!

By the way, I saw this bumper sticker and had to laugh (after I read the translation).
