My home schooling journey started before I had children. When I was five months pregnant I received a catalog in the mail advertising teaching resources for home use. I was curious so I looked through it and was overwhelmed at all the things being sold. Everything looked so wonderful to use that it was very easy to start daydreaming about purchasing a few items.
Then I thought more about being the only one teaching my child and how much of a responsibility that is. 'How was I going to help her with things like math problem solving?' I thought. The fear of failure scared me away and I put the catalog aside for some later time. I was scared, but the idea was intriguing.
Could I Really Do This All By Myself?
Soon after reading through the catalog, I saw another advertisement of a resource you can use to teach at home on a billboard.
Then I heard some friends talking about a school that was starting up. The creators of the school talked with me every now and again about all that went into setting up the school.
During this time I also started noticing ads for at-home learning resources in the mail, on the computer, and in newspapers. It seemed home teaching was everywhere I turned!
My curiosity got the better of me and I started looking more into home schooling my child. I specifically wanted to know how anyone could take on the huge responsibility of being your child’s sole source of education.
Wow, I Just Did It All By Myself!
The more I researched (online, in books and talking with other people who were doing it), I started becoming more comfortable with the idea that this wasn’t an impossible task. After a while, I was even considering teaching my own child. But it wasn’t until my first child was 18 months that I saw the great potential in it.
Soon after she started talking I put up magnetic letters on our fridge. I would tell her what they were as she pointed to them and played with them (who knew natural, crunchy parenting comes...naturally! Can't get any simpler than that!).
One day she came up to me, pointed to my shirt and read a letter on it. I was shocked! I pointed to another letter and she knew that too! That’s when I was hit with the revelation of just how effective home schooling can be. I was hooked! From that day on, I determined it in my heart to teach our children at home.
