Homeschooling Online - Vocabulary SpellingCity.com
by Chante

I discovered SpellingCity.com a few years into our homeschooling and was just thrilled. I’m all for things that make learning for our children easier and fun. I’m also all for anything that will help me stay organized with our children’s work.

SpellingCity.com is a wonderful site full of games and other activities for all grade levels based on spelling words that teachers or parents can leave on the site. After the adult signs in, you can make a spelling list of however many words you are using and save it for your students. Your students then play games with those words and do other activities to reinforce their understanding.
Recently, SpellingCity.com became
Vocabulary SpellingCity.com to incorporate and better reflect the new vocabulary building games and activities that have been added over the years.

When I first started using SpellingCity.com I just used the free version so I could have our children use their spelling word lists in different ways. They could play hangman with the words, match the word to its definition and complete a word find among other things. They loved that and I loved how the games were helping them retain the knowledge of their spelling words and definitions.

When I was introduced to the
premium side of the program (for a family with five children, the price is $29.99/yr), our children were even more excited! They could play more games and instantly fell in love with Letter Fall. They love rushing around with the little mouse character trying to catch the letters of the words from their list in the bucket before they drip on the floor like little drops of water leaking down through a crack in the ceiling on a rainy day. The game starts out slow but speeds up after continuous play which heightens their excitement.

One of the things I didn’t realize before about Vocabulary SpellingCity.com is that you can print out the games. There are a list of about ten types of games and other activities like tests and reports that can are shown in a pdf format and can be printed out to give to your students. This is great for creating your own worksheets. You could print out a certain spelling list being used in a particular game and have your students complete it away from the computer somewhere like outside or even in the car.
There are videos, forums and articles that help teachers at a traditional school or parents in a homeschool figure out and find what the best activity would be for their students. There’s even a forum where you can glean from years of advice or offer your own strategies to those in need of help.
I asked our children to write a bit about why they love going on Vocabulary SpellingCity.com and here’s what they said. This is from my older child:
