It's A Start

by Chante

I started EC'ing today with my 1mo. by just laying baby down and opening her diaper. Soon after I had done that I turned to put something away and she started to pee. When I turned back she was still going. I wanted to scream, "WAIT!", but I knew that would just startle her so I quickly remembered to make my associating sound.

After she finished, I took her to the toilet. I sat with my right leg extending across the back of the toilet while balancing the left part of my body on the side of the seat. I hold her over the opening with her body resting against mine and my hands under her thighs holding her up.

When I went to go pick her up to take her to the bathroom I asked her if she wanted to "go make pee pee". After we were settled on the toilet I made her sound a few times. In between the sounds I continued to ask her the same question. I'm hoping she'll get used to hearing the same intonations in my voice and realize this is the same thing we did before. If she realizes it's the same scenario, then she'll more than likely behave and respond in the same way (elimination!).

As it was, when I looked at her face while asking the question before I picked her up off the bed the first time, she stopped and studied my face. It looked like she was starting to recognize something sounded the same.

I tried three times today using that same method and no winners. I'm not discouraged though. She learned something and so did I. I'd say we got a good start! If not for the practice, at least for the effort!
