Mainstream vs. Natural

When I began motherhood, I was a typical mainstream mother. After hearing about the practices of natural motherhood, I could tell the difference. Becoming a natural Mom oftentimes leads to a total lifestyle change. If you're considering natural motherhood, these may be some changes you find yourself making.

A mainstream Mom usually goes to the hospital she thinks is the best to have her baby
A natural Mom usually stays home, goes to a birth center or has a nurse/midwife present with her in the hospital to have her baby

A mainstream Mom chooses the best public or private school to educate her children
A natural Mom chooses to take full responsibility to educate her children herself

A mainstream Mom shops at the local grocery store
A natural Mom tries to buy from local farmers or buys organicand checks ingredient labels very closely

A mainstream Mom buys the best crib for her baby to sleep in
A natural Mom looks forward to the bonding that occurs when baby sleeps with her (either in the room or in the same bed)

A mainstream Mom buys the best stroller on the market
A natural Mom shops for (or makes her own) baby carriers

A mainstream Mom seeks out the best OB/GYN she can find based on credentials and referrals
A natural Mom uses referrals or her own research to seek out a midwife/doula that she "clicks" with or prepares to have no professional help whatsoever

A mainstream Mom listens to her pediatrician and takes her child to get all their vaccinations
A natural Mom researches what is in those vaccinations and makes the decision to NOT vaccinate her child or vaccinate selectively

A mainstream Mom usually has no idea of or desire to search out alternatives for birth
A natural Mom makes SURE she researches all her options thoroughly and makes her decision based on that research

A mainstream Mom has no idea what a doula is or desire for her services (I know I didn't when I was a mainstream Mom)
A natural Mom thinks a doula may be a wonderful addition to her birthing experience

A mainstream Mom would NEVER think of co-sleeping (she's heard how dangerous it is)
A natural Mom knows that co-sleeping can be done safely and has many benefits (she looks forward to sharing her room/bed with her baby)

A mainstream Mom takes any drug available to eradicate adverse symptoms (headaches, backaches, etc.)
A natural Mom seeks out herbs or foods to rectify the core root of the problem causing the symptoms

A mainstream Mom doesn’t think twice about where the food in the grocery store comes from (I NEVER did)
A natural Mom makes SURE she knows where grocery food comes from

A mainstream Mom has no clue about the benefits of composting for a garden
A natural Mom knows the value of “black gold” and desires to maintain her own compost pile

A mainstream Mom doesn’t think twice about using disposable diapers
A natural Mom doesn’t think twice about using cloth diapers or choosing to practice elimination communication

A mainstream Mom generally parents free from ridicule
A natural Mom oftentimes has to endure social ridicule to practice what she believes is best for her family
