Rubber pants? On a parenting site?
You may be wondering what a page about these pants are doing on a natural parenting site. No, I'm not talking about the kind some adults wear. That would definitely be a topic for another site.
This page is just going to focus on this precursor to the hugely popular cloth diapering industry we see today!
The closest thing to using these as waterproof covers in cloth diapering you're going to find these days are something like these three options:
When I see those pictures I immediately think of the old days when all that was available was diaper pins to hold cloth diapers together.
Back in the day, these covers were the innovation to cloth diapers. They provided a well needed waterproof cover over the cloth diapers.
While they may have solved the bed wetting problem, they created some problems as well. Rubber on a baby doesn't allow for much air to penetrate the diaper and keep sensitive parts cool (especially for baby boys). It led to many instances of diaper rash and irritation of baby's sensitive skin.
But why bother with diaper rash at all? It may seem like a natural, ordinary occurrence, but there is a way to avoid all that. If you're interested, just check out elimination communication and you'll see what I mean.
Rubber pants were phased out when vinyl pants were created. More recently, polyurethane laminate (PUL) has just about phased out vinyl pants.
PUL makes wonderful waterproof covers. It can be paired with other fabrics to make covers more breathable or used by itself to create the perfect barrier against leaks. You can find many different types of PUL covers here:
