My Vaccine AwakeningI remember getting lots of vaccine shots as I was growing up. I probably followed the schedule to a "T" just like everyone else. Why would I question something that seemed to be so normal? If everyone else was doing it and still walking around it had to be okay, right?
One year, I received the flu shot and soon after experienced flu-like symptoms. I didn't remember being around someone with the flu and wondered at the sudden change in my health. I wondered why I had gotten the shot if I was just going to get sick anyway. It was then that I started questioning the potency of vaccines.When I researched the shot a bit more, I discovered that flu-like symptoms were side effects. No one had told me that I might suffer adverse reactions. Instead of being thankful for the protection, I felt betrayed. Years later when I had my own children I tried to remain informed. I relied on what my health care providers were telling me and asked any questions I had. I only researched deeper after a friend's child was damaged as a result of a vaccination shot. I found out I hadn't been getting the whole story on these shots. I now listen to what health care professionals have to say as well as what my own research says. I try not to make any decisions until I have done both of those things. Looking back, I'm glad I got sick that day from the shot. It forced me to become more educated. I am no longer blindly following doctors orders. It has also caused me to nurture the good health my family and I experience.
